For an instant focal point to your backyard, think about building a pond. For example Ontario residents that own Ajax real estate can get in touch with the local utilities like Enbridge or Ontario Hyro. What better way to de-stress than sitting by a pond and listening to water. However, before you start digging, there are a few things to keep in mind to create the perfect backyard oasis.

The first step you should do is to contact your municipality to make sure that there are no gas or electric lines running underneath the spot you have chosen for your pond. Try to stay clear of older trees that will have imposing root systems. For everyone’s pleasure, select a location that can be seen from most of the yard. Alternatively, you can tuck it away in a corner and heavily landscape the pond so that it becomes a little refuge.

Contour the size and shape of your water feature with a string. Shapes are limited when using a pre-formed pond. When working with a liner you can let your imagination run wild. When you start digging, keep in mind the plateau for the plant terrace which will be about eight inches down and one foot wide for liners or commanded by the size of your pre-formed pond. Now would be a great time to double check that the pond’s edges are level. If your power outlet is not near to the pond, you should excavate a shallow trench in which you will bury the PVC pipe that will house the electric cord.

Fill the base of the pond with one inch of sand. The terraced shelves should also be coated by sand. If working with a pre-formed pond, place it in the hole. Otherwise, commence laying down the liner. Cutting four feet longer and wider than the actual pond will aid. Push the liner down and flatten out any creases.

You may now begin to fill the pond. With a pre-formed liner, you need to begin backfilling the space underneath the pond and time it so that you are finished at about the same time the pond is filled. When working with a liner, continuously pull the liner taunt all around. Install your pump at the bottom of the pond and hide the cord.

Now begins the fun portion – dressing up your pond. Place flat rocks along the edge of your pond and add a second layer in a offset pattern. Let the rocks overhang a bit over the water. Place the cord for your pump in between rocks and camouflage it with another flat rock.

Landscaping around your water feature should not be rushed. Is your objective to have the pond blend in with the rest of the garden or do you wish it to be highly visible? You should keep at least one side clear of plants to make it accessible. Creating a feature on one side and one end while leaving the rest of the pond clear is a popular landscaping method. When selecting plants, remember to select ones that will do well in a wet environment. In Ontario, Ajax homes tend to have harsh winters and hot summers so picking plants that tolerate both extremes is essential.

Now is the time to enjoy your hard work. In most cases, ponds can be one weekend affairs. Take the plunge. Add one to your backyard and be ready to receive lots of compliments.
