Everyone should have moving water in their yard or garden, Since they can give so much added enjoyment. Whether you want the feeling of peacefulness and coolness created by the sound of water, or you want to invite more wildlife into your yard, then moving water is just what you need.

You do not have to have a large pond to reap the benefits of moving water, a small garden pond will repay you tremendously for the room you use. The sound and feel of moving water can be created just as easily by using a very small water feature or fountain.

A basic water feature can be easily constructed using a large container buried in the ground with a small pond pump and a plastic hose pipe leading to the surface . Place a wire mesh over the top of your pail and cover with large stones. Placing small pot plants in the rocks can add to the interest . Make sure you select plants that will tolerate the high humidity and they should be placed so that the soil does not get continually washed away. Next decide what type of fountain you want. Simply by stopping the hose just below the level of the rocks will give the effect of water bubbling up and out of the stones. Alternately, you could use a more elaborate fountain. There are many small fountains out there to be found that would do the job admirably well. The third option is a deer scarer. This is in fact bamboo canes which tip when filled with water giving a soothing click when it tips to empty.

Many DIY stores offer kits of parts which assemble into some very charming water features, if you are not happy about building from scratch. These are available in many materials, and you will find a style to suit your environment,(and pocket).

The great thing about this form of construction is that there is no depth of open water for young children or animals to fall in.

All of these fountains are easily built and suitable for any handy person to install. However, remember that a pond pump requires electricity and should be carefully installed by an expert to ensure that it will be perfectly safe for years to come.Since this is a small pond, a solar pond pump may well be sufficient and will then avoid this electricity problem
