Growing bonsai trees is not an expensive hobby with only a few specialist tools required, but a fine bonsai can be much more of a statement in your home than many an expensive ornament. A bonsai is a living ornament.
Bonsai are pot grown trees that are developed to be a miniature of of its full size counterpart. Bonsai trees can be created from almost any perennial woody stemmed trees and shrubs that produce branches and is able to grow in miniature through container confinement with the aid from crown and root trimming.
Bonsai trees can be developed from seed, from young shoots lifted from the countryside, (please observe any laws regarding removing wild plants in your region), or can be bought as ready planted bonsai trees. Although growing bonsai trees from seed is the slowest route, but you will have maximum control of how your bonsai tree will look.
Bonsai are planted in special bonsai pots that restrict the development of the roots but also enhance the beauty of your bonsai. Specialist soil mixtures can be bought that provide the ideal environment for your bonsai to develop.
Many techniques are used to shape and give unique character to your bonsai tree including trimming leaves, wiring branches, grafting on other plants, dwarfing and deadwood, (a process used to age the bark). Only a few special tools are needed to shape bonsai, and these can easily be bought very cheaply. All that you need to start growing bonsai can be easily bought from a bonsai nursery.
Bonsai are available as both indoor and outdoor varieties, and some bonsai trees are best if left outdoors in the summer months and grown inside in the winter.
For those that like the idea, but doesn’t want to keep bonsai, you can purchase artificial bonsai trees.
