Seed Saving Tips & Techniques

Did you know that many of the drugs that you pick-up in the drug store have herb plants in them? Wouldn’t it be a lot easier and cheaper if you grew your own medicinal herb plants? I know I have saved countless dollars by raising my own little first aid kit at home.

Do you have any of these issues? Try herbs!

  • Coriander, chervil and thyme all help awesome for aching joints. For an inexpensive antibacterial, use calendula, lavender, lovage, marjoram, oregano or peppermint.
  • No one likes that. Anise, mint, parsley and sweet cicely can do you a world of wonder.
  • Constipation can be serious. Both dandelion and fennel will help in getting things moving again.
  • It is amazing how many herb plants can help with flatulence, such as peppermint, summer savory, lemon balm, ginger, caraway, coriander, beebalm and lovage.
  • By the end of a hard day I can usually go for some chamomile tea for my frazzled nerves. Some other herbs that could assist include dill, goldenrod, lavender and lemon balm.
  • Not much can is better than thyme for curing your Saturday morning hangover. It works better than the raw egg/tomato juice concoction people might tell you to down.
  • Do you have a terrible case of hiccups that will not go away? Dill can take care of them. It will be fabulous, and if you like dill, it can be a tasty cure.
  • Goldenrod, aloe, summer savory and hens-and-chicks are great for taking the sting out of those insect bites, even mosquito bites.
  • Lying awake all night? Your best bet for some shut eye is chamomile or dill, but any of the herb plants that calm your nerves will assist.
  • If you suffer from seasonal allergies or nasal congestion, sage, horseradish and violet are great options. To clear your sinus passages in no time at all, experiment with a little horseradish.
  • Indigestion and stomachache do well with dill, fennel, lovage and especially peppermint.

Please do not be alarmed with all these treatments—it isn’t snake oil! You don’t believe me? Try it for yourself!

  • Aloe Vera: I torture both of my poor aloe plants by breaking off pieces every couple of days to take care of bug bites and burns, even sunburns Be careful not to over-water your aloe vera plant. It is a succulent and doesn’t need much water or any other special treatment. Just be sure that it gets a lot of light and that its well-drained soil keeps it firmly rooted in the container or garden bed.
  • Chamomile: As one of the more familiar medicinal herb plants, chamomile is good for both mental and physical maladies.. Chamomile has 2 types (German and true or Roman chamomile), both of these herbs can self-sow if you allow it, which will reduce the amount of time you will have to spend replanting these perennial herbs.
  • Horseradish: If you need to clean out your sinuses, just take a smell of this one. Believe it or not, even though it has a peppery flavor, the horseradish herb is a member of the mustard family. Although the leaves can grow to 2 feet long, it is the root that is important for the herb gardener.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.
