In the cold weather you need to make sure that there is no young leaf growth on your grass as this may make it more likely to succumb to diseases and pests. To do this over time, decrease the cutting height of your lawn mower until you are almost grazing the grass. Do this in steps over the course of a few weeks as you don’t want to suddenly remove all the tissue or cause more damage to the grass. You do not want to let the grass grow above 2 inches during the cold weather.

Administer fertilizer to your grass in the late fall. Even though this won’t be used by the lawn during the slow growth of the winter it will be stored in the roots and be immediately usable by the lawn in the Spring when new growth begins. Re-seed brown or bare areas during the Fall. The grass seeds will begin to sprout during the cooler weather.

Clear up any trash from the lawn before the first snowfall. This may include branches, logs, children’s toys, flower pots etc. If not removed when it snows they could smother the grass underneath the blanket of snow and may cause damage which will make the lawn more likely to succumb to disease. During the winter, although the grass grows very slowly weeds will multiply rapidly so you need to weekly pull out weeds to prevent them from causing damage to the turf.

As well you need to water the lawn throughout the winter, although not as much as you would in the Summer. For most varieties of lawn grass watering every week should be sufficient. Some grasses, such as rye grass, Kentucky Bluegrass and tall Fescue grow well in the winter and will benefit from more water during this time.

If you have a sprinkler system drain out all the water to stopharm during a frost. You do not want to start it up next Spring only to find damaged pipes.
