You can grow vegetables in the middle of winter using greenhouse vegetable gardening methods. To cultivate vegetables in a greenhouse is nearly the same as cultivating them outside during the summer. There are just a few additional things you have to do to mimic what nature would do naturally.

To grow vegetables in a portable greenhouse you can use two methods. The first uses the sun’s energy during the day to heat up the structure and is called the cold method. When the temperature drops, a heating element will switch on to keep the temperature to a minimum of 45 degrees F. In this method plants don’t grow; instead they’re just maintained until they can be placed back outside in the summer.

To cultivate vegetables in a garden greenhouse in the wintertime you need warmth and therefore you would use the warm greenhouse method. This method does tend to cost a bit of money because the least temperature that can be maintained is 55 degrees F and this means that a heating system has to be available. The majority of heating systems for greenhouses are either gas, propane or electric.

Most vegetables can be raised in a greenhouse. There are several forms of each vegetable that are available in plants developed purposely for greenhouse growing. Look in seed catalogs to find those kinds. You want to try to find kinds that will thrive in cooler temperatures than usual. You also want to find types that are more compact because room is at a minimum in a greenhouse.

Pollination is one of those things that you will have to do for your plants. Pollinating insects do not exist in greenhouse culture as a general rule so you have to do it for them. Pollinating a vegetable is not hard. Tomatoes, for instance, ought to be tied to bamboo stakes and the stakes can be jiggled in the morning and once in the evening in order to pollinate. You’ll have to watch the flowers carefully to find out when you have to do this. When the flower opens and the petals all bend backwards it’s time. You’ll only have three days to pollinate the tomatoes so take a look every day.

You will have to supplement sunlight during the winter too so plan on supplying grow lights in a winter greenhouse. Plants usually need 8 hours of sunlight per day. You will also have to supply water and fertilizer regularly.

Greenhouse vegetables throughout the winter can be challenging to work with, more so than in the summer, however it can be very gratifying. Tomatoes can be picked out of the greenhouse in the dead of winter. You will be able to have fresh vegetables any time of year.
