How To Make A Garden Compost Bin
It is not necessary to buy a composting container for your pile, keep in mind having something that will keep the pile from spreading will be a good idea. A simple and very low cost way can be to make your own compost bin. If you go about it this way you can determine the size of pile you want and it can prevent unwelcome animals helping themselves to some free food.
If you are using recycled lumber furthermore the lumber has been coated, either painted or stained, be certain that whatever was applied is not harmful. If it is dangerous or toxic you do not want this on or near any of your compost, particularly if you are going to be using it where you are growing food.
To build a simple bin, gather four pieces of four feet long 2X4 and twenty pieces of three feet long 1X6. Begin by hammering the 2X4 lumber pieces into the ground with a sledgehammer at the corners of what will become a 3 feet squared container, the post should measure 3 feet from corner to corner. The next step will be to get the 1X6 boards and nail or screw five of the boards to the 2X4 corner posts. Keep in mind to leave a gap on the 1X6 boards to allow the air to circulate. You can use a piece of plastic or lay boards on the top to cover it and protect it from animals as well as to much rain water.
An optional and very cheap way to build a bin can be with old pallets. Find any old pallets that are not being used, you can try asking at grocery stores or landfills for pallets they might want to dispose of, then put them together to make a square, galvanized wire can be used to hold them together. If you want you can add a fifth to give the bin a bottom, but this is not necessary.
Wire mesh can as well be used to make a bin. You can form a circle with the mesh, and use wire to tie the ends or use wood or metal post to form a square or circle and wrap the wire mesh around it.
