The popularity of organic rose gardening among rose enthusiasts has been on the rise.  Roses have been grown by gardeners for thousands of years prior to the invention of man-made chemicals, and thus roses do not need to be dependent on chemicals in order to grow.  By keeping an organic yard, you can raise the longevity of your roses as well as keep your pets, wildlife, and family away from dangerous chemicals.

The wildlife, earth, and plants have been in existence for millions of years doing fine with no help from man.  It is only when man gets the idea that he can outdo nature that things that the balance of things gets upset.  Plants normally absorb water and nutrients from their roots.  The leaves of the plant go through photosynthesis which is the process of using water and sunlight to make energy.  Bacteria, nematodes, fungus, worms, and other organisms are naturally present in soil.  These organisms break apart dead resources that fertilize the soil.

Using chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides destroy natural soil organisms and disrupt the natural relationship of the roses and the soil.  With no helpful bacteria to defend rose plant roots, destructive fungi can budge in and damage the plant.  In addition, using chemical fertilizers may get your roses addicted to them.  The more you use chemicals to liven up your roses, the more the roses will depend on the chemicals, which is why many are turning to organic rose gardening.

Organic rose gardening is inexpensive and easy.  You are only leaving out the habit of buying pest control and chemical fertilizers.  You will still be able to feed the soil and care for your roses without these things.

Some soil might need a little help.  The best method is to incorporate compost into the soil of a fresh garden or put it over the top as a dressing or mulch in an existing garden.  Anyone can start a compost pile in their yard by adding decaying plant clippings, animal waste, grass clippings, dried leaves, and even kitchen scraps like fruit peels or fish heads to a pile and allowing it to decompose over time.  There are various simple ways to create a compost pile in a heap or in a container but most methods will need you to stir the pile to make certain that the compost is decaying correctly.

Organic rose gardening also means avoiding nearly all types of pest control.  But, that does not mean that you are completely helpless against pests.  Sometimes pesticides not only kill the insects that are doing damage to your plants, they also kill the insects that help your plants by eating the damaging ones.

Some wasps and lady bugs help to eliminate insect pests in your rose garden.  Birds also eat snakes, grubs, lizards, and even frogs to eliminate pest problems.  If pesticides are truly needed, gardeners can buy organic or natural pesticides that are less toxic and very effective.  Also, they can concentrate on a certain problem by exterminating a certain type of pest insect and nothing else.

The objective in rose planting is to grow the largest blooms, the most sweet smelling, and above all the most stunning roses around.  This task can be accomplished with organic rose gardening, by putting just as much time and effort into your garden as you would put money into chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides.
