Water Gardening
At the end of the day, do you feel tired, worn out or just plain stressed? Wouldnt it be nice to have a gorgeous lake house or seaside home to return to, so you could relax and unwind by listening to the nearby sounds of a stream, lake or ocean? Well, even if you live in the city, you too can have the comfort and pleasure of an oasis without a huge cash drain by installing a water garden.
Water gardens are one of the fastest growing trends in gardening and outdoor living. As humans, we always seek water to clean, refresh and rejuvenate us. But we are only just now learning about the added benefits of relaxation and stress relief you will realize just from hearing the sounds of a waterfall or bubbling brook created in your own backyard. Although water gardening may seem a bit difficult, if you follow a few simple rules it is as easy as pie. Use the following principles to help you create and maintain a gorgeous, healthy and self-sustaining water garden:
Sun and lots of it direct sunlight for 7 to 9 hours everyday;
Placement the area cannot be too low or the soil too porous;
Size at least 55 sq. ft. and no deeper than 24″;
Plants cannot cover more than 55% of the water’s surface;
Animals 3 to 5 fish per plant, do not over feed them;
Container that is your preference;
Design should conform to the surrounding landscape;
Chemicals do not use them, period;
Balanced ecosphere the right number of plants and fish means little cleaning.
These are just some tips to get you started as you plan your water garden; what you actually decide is up to you. As far as containers go, the sky is the limit. You can choose a prefabricated pool made from concrete or plastic, you can have a half barrel or old claw-foot bathtub; you can even use a little kiddie pool to house your plants and animals. Remember that the first 3 weeks or more, the water color will have a green tint to it. However, once the natural chemical adjustment between water, animals and plants occurs, you should see the water clear to a beautiful sparkle.
The most appealing part of having a water garden is the overwhelming sense of comfort you derive from it and from watching all of natures creatures that inhabit the surrounding area who are now drawn to your mini-oasis. The idea of listening to the water, looking at the wildlife come up for a refreshing drink and knowing you helped not only your own peace of mind but some of the critters you share space with. That can be more cathartic than the gentle gurgle of the water as it moves throughout your garden pool.
