Your Balcony Herb Garden
Does your balcony need a new image? Try potted herbs! Using pots is good because you can easily change their location as you experiment with the quality and amount of natural light they get. If you grow your balcony herbs in containers, they are portable—so you can bring them indoors at the end of the season.
The best bet for your balcony herb garden is any plant that does well with lots of sun, like a morning glory. These little herbs will tolerate the reflection from the windows and doors and also the heat that a metal balcony captures. Check out your balcony at different times of the day to see the quality of light, the heat and the intensity. You will also want to know which way your balcony is facing—will you get a lot of morning or afternoon sun?
Use gray or silver-colored herb plants as well as those with a velvety texture or thick leaves in your balcony garden. These unique features prevent the loss of water to evaporation.
Try a few of these awesome herb plants on your balcony:
- Aloe vera: Adding an aloe vera plant to your balcony will be a cinch. It tolerates the sun very well and needs minimal watering. It is also very helpful for burns, just snip a little piece off and rub it on the burn. It is sticky, but you will feel better in no time!
- Cayenne pepper: With cayenne pepper on your balcony, you can always add a little spice to your meal next time you grill out. This plant should do quite well on your balcony and add some color too.
- Cucumber: Trailing cucumber vine can add a new texture to the herbs on your balcony. You can also use cucumbers in cosmetics—think facials! You can also grab a few cucumbers to slice for your salads, straight from the balcony!
- Hens-and-chicks: I completely love hens-and-chicks. Because they are succulents, they will hold water very well (less watering for you) and they can handle the bright sun and hot temperatures you may have on your balcony. They are cute to look at too!
- Lavender: Because lavender is a fragrant plant, you will be able to breathe in the soothing smell of lavender when you put it on your balcony. The lovely purple buds can make a colorful balcony even more colorful.
You can select a few nice-sized pots to put on your balcony or try a hanging balcony basket that has an inside layer from a coconut liner. I once made my own balcony basket with chicken wire and moss. I’d never tried anything like that before. That basket was not the best thing since sliced bread, but it was functional. It will work best if you carefully consider the drainage when you are buying your basket or pot.
Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.
